This is a very beautiful stromatolite slab from the Precambrian of Australia. Authorities believe that stromatolites were formed by masses of green or blue-green algae, or ''cyanobacteria''. Pilbaria perplexa is believed to have grown in a shallow marine lagoon environment with rare periods of emergence. It is also believed that this stromatolite is 2 billion years old! This striking slab has been highly polished on one side for optimal display. The unique pattern of the stromatolite is beautifully showcased, and the natural orange and gold color of the mineral replacement is quite striking. This is a fabulous example of this very uncommon stromatolite from Down Under.
