This is a very distinct stromatolite specimen from the Precambrian of Australia. Authorities believe that stromatolites were formed by masses of green or blue-green algae, or ''cyanobacteria''. It is believed that this stromatolite is 3.4 billion years old - this is one of the oldest fossils ever found! This striking slab has been highly polished on one side for optimal display. The unique pattern of the stromatolite is beautifully showcased, and the color of the mineral replacement are quite beautiful. This is a large, detailed example of one of the oldest fossils on Earth.
