This is an excellent example of a very interesting stromatolite specimen from the Precambrian of Australia. Authorities believe that stromatolites were formed by masses of green or blue-green algae, or ''cyanobacteria''. It is believed that this stromatolite is 3.4 billion years old - this is the oldest fossil we have ever had! This striking slab has been highly polished on one side for optimal display. The unique pattern of the stromatolite is beautifully showcased, and the natural color of the mineral replacement is quite striking. This is a colorful, detailed example of one of the oldest fossils on Earth.
