This is a wonderful specimen of a puzzling fossil. This is large Phyllograptus sp., a graptolite, from the Ordovician of Utah. Graptolites are extinct marine organisms which are still argued about by authorities as to where they fit into the big picture. Usually, graptolites are preserved as thin, chalk-like markings on the rock. However, this graptolite is quite distinct and exhibits excellent detail. The ''leaf-like'' fossil has small, spine-like, clearly defined projections which radiate from the body. The graptolite has excellent color and contrast and is well presented on the plate of shale that also has other partials preserved. This is a great example of this enigmatic fossil.
