This is a very rare echinoderm fossil. It is a fabulous MULTIPLE Archaeocidaris wortheni from the Mississippian of St. Louis. Fossil echinoids from the St. Louis area are famous around the world and have been extremely sought-after by collectors for decades. These spiny urchins are much larger than the Lepidocidaris found in the Mississippian Warsaw Formation, and are OLDER than the Pennsylvanian Archaeocidaris from Texas. These massive urchins are complete with MANY long spines still intact. Most of the types of urchins from this site are much smaller (there are three species!), and larger ones are extremely rare. There are also many of the smaller types of urchins preserved on this plate. The echinoids display well on the very large plate of dense limestone. This is a very unusual MULTIPLE example of large Mississippian Archaeocidaris from the St. Louis Formation.
