This is a very rare and important find. It is a fabulous, large Archaeocidaris wortheni from the Mississippian of St. Louis. Fossil echinoids from the St. Louis area are famous around the world and have been extremely sought-after by collectors for decades. These spiny urchins are much larger than the Lepidocidaris found in the Mississippian Warsaw Formation, and are OLDER than the Pennsylvanian Archaeocidaris from Texas. This wide-bodied urchin is complete with MANY long spines still intact. Most of the types of urchins from this site are much smaller (there are three species!), and the larger types are extremely rare. The echinoid displays well in the center of the squared plate of matrix. This is a large, rare example of a Mississippian Archaeocidaris wortheni from the St. Louis Formation.
This fossil was collected and obtained legally, and is also being sold legally.
