Here is a beautiful specimen of a stromatolite. This is Kinneyia simulans from the Precambrian of Australia. This stromatolite is reported to be 2.4 to 2.6 billion years old! Authorities believe that stromatolites were formed by masses of green or blue-green algae, or ''cyanobacteria''. This distinct plate of stromatolite has been highly polished on one side for optimal display, and the unusual depositional pattern is wonderfully showcased. The orange-pinkish-cream coloration of the mineral replacement is quite striking. This is a gorgeous stromatolite from Western Australia.
