Here is a very colorful stromatolite from the Precambrian of Australia. Authorities believe that stromatolites were formed by masses of green or blue-green algae, or ''cyanobacteria''. The depositional layers of this stromatolite are quite distinct and are over a billion years old! This stromatolite slab has been highly polished on one side to reveal the beautiful colors of the mineral replacement. The red lines of jasper and the black lines of hematite combine with the golden flashes of tigereye to make for a very striking display. This is a beautiful slab of stromatolite from ''Down Under''.
