Specimen SSA748
This is a beautiful ammonite fossil. It is a very large Speetoniceras versicolor from the Cretaceous of Russia. This type of ammonite has strong ribs that bifurcate near the rounded keel. This cephalopod is extremely 3-dimensional and exhibits wonderful detail. The ribbing pattern of the mollusk is quite evident, and the extremely tiny, inner whorls of the ammonite are easily seen. The colorful pyritic shell of the ammonite is still intact and contrasts well with the light-colored matrix. The large ammonite (almost seven inches across) is wonderfully centered on the sculpted plate of concretionary limestone. This is a fantastic display specimen of this Cretaceous ammonite that could easily be one of the centerpieces of any ammonite collection.
