This is a spectacular ammonite fossil. It is a HUGE Speetoniceras versicolor from the Cretaceous of Russia. This type of ammonite has strong ribs that bifurcate near the rounded keel. This cephalopod is extremely 3-dimensional and exhibits wonderful detail. The ribbing pattern of the mollusk is quite evident, and the tiny, inner whorls of the ammonite are intact and very easily seen. The colorful nacreous and pyritized shell of the ammonite is still intact and contrasts well with the light-colored matrix. The ammonite is beautifully centered on the sculpted block of concretionary limestone. This is a fantastic display specimen of a large Cretaceous ammonite that could easily be the centerpiece of any ammonite collection.
