Due to their delicate nature, flowers are very rare in the fossil record. This is a fine specimen of Astronium truncatum, a tropical flower, from the Eocene of Utah. This fossil flower exhibits wonderful detail - all five petals are beautifully displayed. The fossil has wonderful color and contrast and is well positioned on the large, natural plate of shale. And, believe it or not, there is a smaller, complete flower on the other side of the plate! This is an excellent example of a rare and Astronium flower.
