This is a very special fossil. It is a large Opalized Belemnite from the famous Opal Mines of South Australia. These mines produce some of the best Fire Opal in the world. Occasionally, a fossil is found in these deposits. These fossils are some of the most beautiful and collectible fossils in the world - some reach prices of literally thousands of dollars or more. This specimen is one of these fossils. The translucent cephalopod has been professionally polished to reveal the gorgeous color trapped within. The bluish-violet tint of the fossil with red-green highlights is both striking and spectacular - how many blue fossils do you have in your collection? And the fact that the fossil is over an inch long, the amount of opal represented is staggering. This is a very unique offering of a fossil replaced by semi-precious gemstone, collectible as both a fossil and a gem.
